Retrieval mechanism

This jump site holds some 30 different patents, probably including this retrieval mechanism. The rubber boot in this photo is upside down — the rings at the top are what’s attached to your ankle harness. After bouncing 9 or 10 times, the big steel widget he’s holding comes rushing down the bungy cord and latches into that red rubber boot. The steel widget is attached to another rope which automatically pulls you back up to the jump pod. When that steel widget hits the boot, there’s a loud clang and an instant where you feel like you’re being cut loose from the cord. Possibly the scariest thing that happens to you post-jump.
